State Representative Brian Lorenz announced that the Ohio House of Representatives has passed legislation he co-sponsored, aiming to encourage men to prioritize their health. The legislation introduces two new statewide designations: June as "Male Wellness Month" and the third Monday in June as "Take Your Dad to the Doctor and Dentist Day" (DAD Day).
The bipartisan initiative seeks to promote routine doctor visits, mental health screenings, and dental care among men. House Bill 207 also instructs the Ohio Department of Health to create a promotional poster for boards of health to enhance awareness and support participation.
"We want Male Wellness Month to serve as a reminder, not just for men, but for families, employers, and healthcare providers, that wellness isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity," said Rep. Lorenz. "Encouraging healthy habits, regular checkups, mental health awareness, and open conversations can save lives."
The key provisions of the legislation include:
- Designating June as "Male Wellness Month" to promote prostate exams, colonoscopies, and mental health screenings among men.
- Designating the third Monday of June as "Take Your Dad to the Doctor and Dentist Day" ("DAD Day").
Research shows that men are generally less likely than women to seek medical help. According to the CDC, heart disease and cancer are leading causes of death among males but can often be managed or treated when detected early.
By fostering discussions around male wellness and promoting preventative care, the bill aims to improve long-term health outcomes for Ohio's male population and inspire changes in how men approach their healthcare.
