State Rep. Brian Lorenz | The Ohio House of Representatives
State Representatives Gary Click and Brian Lorenz have announced that the Ohio House of Representatives has passed Keith's Law. This legislation is designed to enhance the ability of first responders to assist individuals with special needs during emergencies.
House Bill 144, introduced by Click and Lorenz, proposes the creation of a voluntary statewide database. This database will allow individuals with special needs to share important information with first responders before a crisis occurs. Each county's 9-1-1 system will be required to distribute relevant information to first responders when dispatched, enabling them to provide effective assistance swiftly.
Gary Click expressed his gratitude towards local resident Keith Jesse for inspiring the legislation. "Thanks to his efforts, Keith’s Law is one step closer to becoming law in Ohio," said Click. He emphasized the importance of time during emergencies and noted that the database would enhance responsiveness across Ohio without being restricted by community boundaries.
Brian Lorenz highlighted that people with disabilities often face unique challenges requiring specific responses from first responders. "We believe this legislation will help our first responders appropriately handle situations involving these individuals," he stated.
The administration of this database will be a collaborative effort between Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities and the Ohio Department of Public Safety.
Keith's Law is now awaiting consideration from the Ohio Senate.
