The Ohio Senate has passed House Bill 187, which aims to provide immediate property tax relief for eligible seniors and disabled veterans. The bill, introduced by State Senator Andrew Brenner, increases the income eligibility amount from $36,100 to $75,000. This expansion of the homestead exemption will provide direct tax relief to those most affected by rising property valuations.
Senator Brenner, who has been receiving feedback from constituents about the impact of property valuations on their lives, expressed his support for the bill. He stated, "This bill will give relief to those who need it most and is a step in the right direction for all Ohioans."
To qualify for the increased homestead exemption, individuals must meet certain criteria. These include having a household income at or below $75,000 and being at least 65 years old, permanently and totally disabled, or the surviving spouse of someone who meets the eligibility requirements and is at least 59 years old.
The increased exemption amounts for the next three years will be as follows:
- Incomes of $36,100 and below: $30,000 exemption
- Incomes between $36,101 and $49,000: $22,500 exemption
- Incomes between $49,001 and $62,000: $15,000 exemption
- Incomes between $62,001 and $75,000: $7,500 exemption
Furthermore, the exemption amount for disabled veterans will increase from $50,000 to $60,000.
The passing of House Bill 187 in the Ohio Senate marks an important step towards providing much-needed property tax relief for eligible seniors and disabled veterans. The bill will now move to the Ohio House for concurrence.
