WASHINGTON, D.C. - On May 17, the Communications and Technology Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee approved the American Broadband Deployment Act of 2023, which includes legislation sponsored by Rep. Balderson to streamline the permitting process for the rollout of rural broadband networks.

The American Broadband Deployment Act of 2023 is a collection of legislative efforts focused on improving broadband internet access. The package includes Rep. Balderson's H.R. 3287, the Cable Access for Broadband and Local Economic Leadership Act, which puts a "shot clock" on cable franchising authorities to grant or deny franchises to providers.

"Too many Americans remain unable to access high-speed internet because the buildouts of new networks are held in limbo due to lengthy application processes for franchising approval," said Rep. Balderson. "This legislation establishes a common sense "shot clock" to help ensure projects are not bogged down by countless delays. I'm proud to join my Energy and Commerce colleagues to advance these long-overdue reforms aimed at closing the digital divide for rural Americans."

"Many families and businesses across the country still lack access to broadband, which is a critical part of today's economy," said Chair Rodgers. "Energy and Commerce is leading to remove regulatory red tape, deploy broadband faster, get Americans across the country connected, and close the digital divide once and for all. This legislative package we're unveiling today will help us connect all Americans, and I commend Rep. Balderson for his leadership on the CABLE Leadership Act, which will help us achieve these goals."

The American Broadband Deployment Act of 2023 now advances to the full House Energy and Commerce Committee for further consideration.
