House Bill 206, a legislative measure aimed at enhancing the safety of students and school staff, is now awaiting the approval of Governor Mike DeWine. The bill, supported by State Senator Andrew Brenner from Delaware, allows educational institutions to expel students who pose significant threats to the health and well-being of others.
"This legislation protects students and staff safety and helps ensure a safe learning environment for all," said Brenner.
The bill mandates that expelled students must meet specific conditions before they can return to school in the following academic year. One such condition includes undergoing an assessment by a psychiatrist or licensed psychologist.
Additional provisions in House Bill 206 include requirements for schools to report expulsion data to the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. The bill also proposes increased funding for School Choice administration in fiscal year 2025, improved access to seizure medication for students, and offers qualifying community schools options to avoid closure.
"This bill addresses many concerns that have come forward from parents, staff, and administrators in our schools across the Buckeye State. I look forward to these solutions going into effect and making a positive impact on our next generation," Brenner added.
