State Senator Andrew Brenner | The Ohio Senate
The Ohio Senate has passed Senate Bill 162, sponsored by State Senator Andrew Brenner (R-Delaware), which requires public school students who demonstrate a limited level of skill on a state assessment to receive academic intervention services at no cost. This bill aims to address the significant number of students in Ohio who are struggling academically and ensure that they receive the necessary support to improve their educational outcomes.
According to Senator Brenner, nearly one-third of Ohio's students scored limited in math and one-fifth scored limited in English last year. Recognizing the urgency of this issue, Brenner emphasized the importance of providing evidence-based resources to students as soon as possible to address their ongoing learning deficiency.
Senate Bill 162 specifically targets students who demonstrate a limited level of proficiency in English Language Arts and Math. These students will be eligible for a range of services, including tutoring supports, additional instructional time, an extended school calendar, or any other academically centered support service that the school or district determines will improve their academic performance.
"This legislation helps address an urgent need for Ohio's students and puts them back on the path to success," stated Senator Brenner.
The passage of Senate Bill 162 in the Ohio Senate highlights the state's commitment to ensuring that every student has access to the support they need to succeed academically. The bill will now proceed to the Ohio House for further consideration.
By providing academic intervention services to students who demonstrate limited proficiency, Ohio aims to close the achievement gap and ensure that all students have an equal opportunity to excel in their education.
