Marietta Defeats Women's Basketball

Junior guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) scored the first 5 points of a 7-0 run that gave Ohio Wesleyan an early lead, but Marietta retook the lead late in the first quarter and went on to a non-conference win over the Bishops on Wednesday in Marietta.

The Pioneers went up, 3-0, when Kelly Levering hit a 3-pointer on the opening possession of the game, but Homan drove for a lay-in and followed with a 3-pointer before junior guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) scored for a 7-3 Bishop lead.

Ohio Wesleyan still led, 9-5, after a bucket by sophomore post Alyssa Griner (Delaware/Hayes), but Marietta closed out the first quarter with a 14-0 run, getting a pair of 3-pointers from Paige Tolson and another by Adi Hill.  The Pioneers extended the run to 19-0 when Ally Grake sank a 3-pointer and Camille Cummins hit a jumper from the lane early in the second quarter.

Junior guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) knocked down a jumper to end the Bishops' scoring drought, and Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 27-17 on a 3-pointer by freshman guard Graci Semptimphelter (Franklin, Tenn./Battle Ground Academy) late in the half.

Schipfer opened the second half by converting a 3-point play and adding a pair of free throws to make it 31-24 at the 7:25 mark, but the Pioneers countered and stretched the lead to 16 when Olivia Gribble kicked off the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer that gave Marietta a 53-37 advantage.

Semptimphelter rallied the Bishops with a lay-in, a pair of 3-pointers, and a 3-point play during the fourth quarter, helping Ohio Wesleyan close to within 62-54 with 3:22 remaining.  A Denison jumper with :32 left made it a 68-61 game, but that 7-point margin was as close as the Bishops would come.

Schipfer led the Bishops with 18 points and 7 rebounds and shared the team lead with 4 assists.  Semptimphelter finished with 16 points and Denison added 12 points.  Homan shared the team lead with 4 assists.
