Schipfer, Homan Help Women's Basketball Pull Away from Muskingum

Ohio Wesleyan 75, Muskingum 67

Junior guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) and junior guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) combined for 9 points during a 13-2 third quarter run that opened up a double-digit lead for Ohio Wesleyan, and the Bishops went on to record a non-conference win over Muskingum on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

The Bishops led, 30-26, at the half, and it was a 32-28 game after the teams traded points to open the third quarter.

Homan buried a 3-pointer to kick off the Bishop run, and sophomore post Alyssa Griner (Delaware/Hayes) and Schipfer followed with lay-ins to extend the margin into double figures.  Homan followed with a lay-in, and after Muskingum's Taylor DeMassimo hit a jumper from the lane, sophomore post Karlee Ross (Beverly/Fort Frye) and Schipfer hit lay-ins for a 45-30 Bishop lead midway through the period.

The Bishops extended the margin to 20 points early in the fourth quarter when Schipfer's lay-in made it 59-39, and Ohio Wesleyan still led by a 72-56 count after a jumper by junior guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) with 2:50 remaining.

Muskingum rallied in the closing minutes, with Claudia Harrington collecting a 3-pointer, a pair of free throws, and a jumper to spark a game-ending 11-3 run.

Ohio Wesleyan looked to pull away late in the first period as a 3-pointer and a lay-in by freshman guard Graci Semptimphelter (Franklin, Tenn./Battle Ground Academy) turned a 13-9 lead into an 18-9 cushion, but the Muskies came back behind Caitlyn DeMassimo, who sank a pair of free throws to close out the period, then hit 2 more from the stripe and followed with a lay-in early in the second quarter before converting a 3-point play to give the visitors a 22-18 lead with 6:44 left in the half.

In the final 2 minutes of the period, Schipfer hit a pair of free throws and followed with a lay-in to put the Bishops ahead to stay at 28-26, and sophomore guard Lauren Gerber (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) wrapped up the first half with a jumper from the lane for the 30-26 score at the intermission.

Schipfer led the Bishops with 24 points and 10 rebounds for her third consecutive double-double.  Denison finished with 13 points, while Griner and Ross had 10 points apiece.  Homan led the Bishops with 8 assists and grabbed a career-high 9 rebounds.
